Day 1 – Arrive in Accra

After arriving at Accra International Airport, make your way to your accommodation. The easiest options are Bolt, Yango, airport taxis, or pre-arranged hotel transfers.

Choose accommodation in neighborhoods such as:

  • Osu
  • Labone
  • Cantonments
  • Ridge
  • East Legon (if you prefer a quieter area)

Budget travelers can find plenty of guesthouses, hostels, and affordable hotels throughout Osu and nearby neighborhoods.

Spend the rest of the day settling in, exchanging some money if necessary, buying a local SIM card, and enjoying your first Ghanaian meal.

Day 2 – Discover Accra

Spend the day exploring Ghana's vibrant capital.

Suggested attractions include:

  • Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park
  • Black Star Square (Independence Square)
  • National Museum of Ghana
  • Jamestown
  • Makola Market
  • Arts Centre for National Culture
  • Oxford Street in Osu

Getting around is simple using Bolt, taxis, or trotros if you're comfortable using public transport.

In the evening, enjoy local dishes such as jollof rice, waakye, grilled tilapia, or banku at one of Accra's many restaurants.

Day 3 – Travel to Cape Coast via Assin Manso

Take an early STC bus or shared minibus from Accra to Cape Coast.

If you're travelling by private taxi or rental car, consider stopping at Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River Park, where enslaved Africans took their final bath before being transported to the coast.

Continue to Cape Coast Castle, one of Ghana's most significant UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Join one of the guided tours to learn about the history of the transatlantic slave trade.

Spend the night in Cape Coast.

Budget accommodation is widely available near the beach and town centre.

Day 4 – Kakum National Park and Return to Accra

Start early and travel to Kakum National Park, approximately 30 minutes from Cape Coast.

The highlight is the famous Canopy Walkway, suspended high above the rainforest, offering spectacular views across the tropical forest.

If time allows, explore one of the park's guided nature trails before returning to Cape Coast.

In the afternoon, catch an STC bus back to Accra or hire a taxi if travelling with others.

Day 5 – A Flexible Day in Accra

Keep this day open to explore according to your interests.

Popular options include:

  • Relaxing at Labadi Beach
  • Visiting W.E.B. Du Bois Memorial Centre
  • Shopping at Makola Market
  • Exploring Osu's cafés and restaurants
  • Visiting the Artists Alliance Gallery
  • Taking a food tour

It's also a great opportunity to slow down before continuing your journey.

Day 6 – Experience Ghana's Independence Heritage

If you're visiting around 6 March, head to Black Star Square to witness Ghana's Independence Day celebrations.

Military parades, cultural performances, marching bands, and patriotic celebrations make this one of the country's most exciting annual events.

Outside Independence Day, spend more time exploring the area around Independence Square, the coastline, and nearby landmarks.

In the evening, experience Accra's nightlife in Osu or enjoy live highlife or Afrobeat music.

Day 8 – Day Trip to Aqua Safari Resort

Head east toward Ada for a relaxing day along the Volta River.

You can reach the area by STC bus, shared transport, or private taxi.

Many visitors purchase a day pass at Aqua Safari Resort, where activities may include:

  • Boat cruises
  • Swimming pools
  • Kayaking
  • Jet skiing (optional)
  • Riverside walks
  • Restaurants overlooking the Volta River

It's an excellent opportunity to unwind after several days of sightseeing.

Return to Accra in the evening or stay overnight in Ada if your schedule allows.

Day 9 – Shopping and Exploring Accra

Use your final full day to pick up souvenirs and revisit your favourite parts of the city.

Great places to shop include:

  • Arts Centre for National Culture
  • Makola Market
  • Wild Gecko Handicrafts
  • Local boutiques in Osu

Popular souvenirs include:

  • Kente cloth
  • Handmade jewelry
  • Wood carvings
  • Shea butter products
  • Coffee and cocoa products
  • Adinkra fabrics

Finish your trip with dinner at one of Accra's many rooftop restaurants or seaside venues while watching the sunset.

Day 10 – Departure

Depending on your flight time, enjoy a relaxed breakfast before heading to Kotoka International Airport.

Bolt and airport taxis are usually the easiest way to reach the airport from most parts of Accra.

If your flight is later in the day, you may still have time for one final coffee in Osu or a quick visit to a nearby market before saying goodbye to Ghana.
