Official Ghana Museums Website Redirects to Gambling and Adult Content: Security Warning (July 2026)

Official Ghana Museums Website Redirecting to Gambling Sites? Security Warning for Visitors (July 2026)
This is becoming ridiculous.
While checking the official website of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) on two different smartphones—a Samsung and an Honor device—I encountered a deeply concerning issue.
The official GMMB website appeared to be experiencing malicious redirects. During testing on multiple devices on 3 July 2026, visitors were repeatedly redirected to third-party gambling and adult-content websites instead of the expected government pages.
The destination URLs were clearly unrelated to the legitimate GMMB website.
This is a **serious security failure** on the official website responsible for Ghana’s most important cultural heritage.
Whether this is the result of a security breach, compromised code, or another technical failure, the outcome for visitors is the same: users attempting to access official information about Ghana's cultural heritage may instead be exposed to inappropriate and potentially unsafe third-party websites.
For a government institution responsible for safeguarding some of Ghana's most treasured historical sites, this is a serious issue that deserves immediate attention.

This level of technical failure is simply **unacceptable**.
Unfortunately, this incident does not stand alone.
Over the years, visitors and researchers have repeatedly encountered problems affecting Ghana's official heritage infrastructure, including:
- Government heritage websites that become unavailable, are suspended, or experience serious technical failures.
- Historic forts, castles, and monuments that continue to deteriorate while remaining open to paying visitors.
- Public statements celebrating progress while longstanding maintenance issues remain unresolved.
The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board is entrusted with preserving internationally significant heritage sites, including Elmina Castle, Cape Coast Castle, and numerous other museums, forts, castles, and archaeological landmarks across the country.
That responsibility extends beyond preserving physical monuments. It also includes maintaining secure, reliable digital platforms that the public can trust.
Twenty-Five Years of Independent Documentation
I have been documenting Ghana's history, tourism, museums, forts, castles, and cultural heritage independently for more than 25 years.
During that time, I have watched the gap between official messaging and on-the-ground reality become increasingly difficult to ignore.
Today's website incident is disappointing, but it is not entirely surprising. It reflects broader challenges in maintaining both Ghana's cultural infrastructure and the digital services intended to support it.
As someone who has spent decades promoting Ghana internationally, I believe constructive criticism is part of protecting the country's heritage—not attacking it.
Ignoring these problems serves no one.

**Fix your website(s) immediately.**
This kind of security breach is embarrassing for the entire country.
This issue deserves urgent attention.
If the official website is redirecting visitors to unrelated gambling or adult-content websites, immediate technical investigation and remediation should be treated as a priority.
Government websites represent public trust. Visitors—including researchers, tourists, students, members of the Ghanaian diaspora, and international organisations—should be able to access official information without concern that they may be redirected elsewhere.
Maintaining both Ghana's historic monuments and its official digital platforms is not an optional responsibility. It is a core part of preserving the country's cultural heritage and reputation.
Advice for Visitors
Until the issue has been investigated and resolved, visitors should exercise caution when accessing official heritage websites.
If you encounter unexpected redirects or suspicious pages, avoid interacting with them and verify information through alternative trusted sources where possible.
